Ontario Homes for Sale & Real Estate

Ontario, California, is located in San Bernardino County.  The city has a population of about 164,000 making it the fourth most populated city in the county.  It is situated in the western part of the Inland Empire region and is just east of the Los Angeles County line, located just 35 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.  Ontario covers an area of 50 square miles.  Neighboring cities include Chino, Eastvale, Fontana, Montclair, Rancho Cucamonga, and Upland. Ontario is named for the Ontario Model Colony, a development created in the 1880s by the Canadian Chaffey brothers.  The town is the namesake of their home province of Onatrio, Canada.  It is also known by its nickname, "Gateway to Southern California".

Most of the home construction in Ontario is relatively new as a result of the healthy local economy attracting new residents to the city.  Ontario has been one of southern California's fastest growing cities for more than 25 years, and it is expected that the population of the Greater Ontario area will reach 1.8 million by 2020. A new residential development called the New Model Colony is currently being planned in the southern part of town.  It will consist of 13 square miles of upscale homes and it is expected to attract 120,000 to its projected 31,000 homes.  It will be one of the nation's first "smart" communities, with a common fiber optic telecommunications network as part of its supporting infrastructure.

Being a major transportation hub, Ontario is served by many major roadways including I-10, SR 60, I-15 and SR 83.  The city has a Metrolink station which connects it with most of the Greater Los Angeles area.  Public bus service is provided by Omnitrans.  The city is home to LA/Ontario International Airport which provides domestic and international air travel and is also a major hub for freight.
